No Jitter has posted an interesting new article on Unified Communications and the use of a single number to “find” a user.

Interesting story, but isn’t this what presense is supposed to fix? Rather than ringing to multiple number locations on the off-chance of finding a user, presense *should* tell the telephony system where the user is “logged in” currently and only attempt that location. On that device (iPhone, cell phone, desk phone, etc.) the user would have the ability to send the call to voice mail, let it ring or answer it, but the telephony admin wouldn’t need to be concerned about extra trunking (SIP or TDM) as the PBX would only try the device on which the user has indicated that they are available.
